Soy formula for lactose intolerant infants

Rating: 2.4/5 (61 votes cast)

Soy formula is now being recommended for babies who may be allergic to cow's milk, or simply lactose intolerant. These soy baby formulas are based from soy milk, and are specially prepared to meet a baby's total nutritional needs. The following paragraphs will provide some valuable information if you are considering soy baby formula for your infant.

Differences in Soy Formula and Cow's Milk Formula for Babies

There are two main differences in soy formula and cow's milk formula. Soy infant formula does not contain the same proteins that are apparent in cow's milk formulas, and soy formula does not contain any lactose, or milk sugar. This is why many health care professionals will recommend soy based baby formula for infants who are allergic to cow's milk, or for babies who have a lactose intolerance.

Soy based formula, and organic soy formula provide all the nutrition a baby needs in order to maintain good health and proper growth. They often contain more aluminum than cow's milk formula because the soy beans themselves contain aluminum naturally. The added aluminum is considered harmless for normal infants.

Please note, regular soy milk should not be used as a substitute for infant formula. There are many reasons why soy milk is not sufficient for children under two years of age. Soy milk is not a complete food, and does not provide complete nutrition. These missing nutrients are specifically added to soy formula for babies, including iron, calcium, and Vitamin B.

Additional Reasons To Use Soy Formula

Besides your baby being allergic to cow's milk, or being lactose intolerant, there are other reasons why a health care professional may recommend soy based infant formula for your baby. Sometimes when a baby has frequent colic, or problems digesting cow milk formula, you may want to consider alternatives like soy formula.

Heredity also plays a factor in what type of formula may be best for your baby. If you have a family history of certain diseases, it may be recommended you use a soy based formula to feed your infant. These diseases include but are not limited to thyroid disease and asthma.
