How to make soy biodiesel from scratch

With the ever-growing interest and popularity of environmentally friendly alternative fuels, many people are beginning to wonder how to make soy biodiesel for themselves. Making soybean biodiesel fuel is not a difficult process. But, to make soy biodiesel, a person must use caution.

The process of making soybean biodiesel involves using a process called transesterification to turn the soybean oil into esters. Through this process, the soybean oil, which is a triglyceride, is separated. When this is done, the glycerine in the soybean oil sinks while the useful soybean biodiesel fuel floats to the top and waits to be siphoned off.

The Ingredients

To make soy biodiesel, a few basic ingredients are needed. They are:

  • soybean oil
  • pure methanol
  • lye catalyst
  • blender or mini-processor
  • scales, with an accuracy to 0.1 grams or less (the more accurate, the better)
  • beakers for measuring methanol and oil
  • translucent white HDPE (#2 plastic) container.
  • two funnels that can fit the HDPE container
  • 2-liter PET bottle - a water or soft-drink bottle will due (this is used for settling)
  • two 2-liter PET bottles (these will be used for washing)
  • duct tape
  • thermometer
