How to Make Soy Milk at Home

Soy milk is an extremely beneficial component to any diet. With increasing knowledge about the health benefits of soy milk, many are looking to add this delightful drink to their diets. Though most supermarkets now carry soy milk in the dairy section, many are also wanting to know how to make soy milk at home.

There are many variations available on-line and in books teaching how to make soy milk. This basic recipe, however, can be used and varied according to taste.

Ingredients for Homemade Soy Milk

Homemade soy milk can be made with a soy milk machine. This recipe, however, shows how to make soy milk without the use of special machines or tools.

To make 6 cups of homemade soy milk, the following ingredients are necessary:

  • Water
  • 1 cup soybeans
  • ½ teaspoon and 1/8 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 ounces (60 grams) sugar (though more or less can be added to taste)
  • a pinch (about 2 grams) salt (though more or less can be added to taste)
  • Optional flavors, such as vanilla or chocolate

The following supplies are also needed to make homemade soy milk:

  • Stove
  • Medium Saucepan
  • Stirring Spoon
  • Measuring Spoons
  • Measuring Cup
  • Strainer

Steps to Making Homemade Soy Milk

1. Inspect the soybeans. Remove any damaged, cracked, or discolored soybeans.
2. Clean the soybeans thoroughly.
3. Bring 4 cups of water to a boil.
4. Add ½ teaspoon baking soda to the water as it boils.
5. Add 1 cup soybeans to the boiling water. Blanch for five minutes.
6. Drain the soybeans and rinse with hot water.
7. Bring another 4 cups of water to a boil.
8. Add 1/8 teaspoon baking soda to the boiling water.
9. Place the soybeans in the new pot of boiling water. Blanch again for 5 minutes.
10. Drain the soybeans again and rinse with hot water.
11. Grind the blanched soybeans along with very hot water (not boiling) on high speed for 3 minutes.
12. Filter the soy milk through cheesecloth.
13. Allow what is left in the cheesecloth to cool, then squeeze out any remaining soy milk.
14. Add the salt and sugar to taste. Chocolate or vanilla can also be added.
15. Simmer soy milk with all ingredients for 20 minutes. Stir frequently.

Homemade soy milk can be served hot or cold. After the initial serving, however, soy milk should be refrigerated if it is not going to be entirely consumed in the same day. Homemade soy milk can generally last about 5 days when refrigerated.
